Star Trek: TNG season one

I started watching Star Trek: The Next Generation on DVD. I decided that it’s very unlikely I’ll every get my money back from the guy who sold it to me. (I bought it in an eBay auction, it arrived, but it’s an import, not the American version listed.) I’m on the sixth disc of 48. So far I haven’t seen anything that would lead me to believe this isn’t a legit release imported from the Asian market.
That being said, I’m almost finished with the first season. The pilot, “Encounter at Far Point,” was fascinating, but many of the other episodes of this season are laughably bad. The alien planets are so obviously soundstages, the costumes are “wrong,” some character’s make-up is “wrong.” The dialog in this season is so obvious, the characters explain what is happening as if the audience is stupid. For the first half of this season the music is overwhelming, in the second half it becomes more subtle. An enjoyable, if laughable, bonus is this season has a few bloopers that made it the final cut. In one episode, a character reaches to set a wine glass on an off-screen table, but a mysterious hand appears in the corner of the screen and takes it.
All these goofs or mistakes are common in the first season of any show that runs as long as TNG. What’s odd for me is remembering this season is 20 years old! The actors that play children in this season are full grown adults now! Wil Wheaton, who plays the annoying Wesley Crusher, is in is 30s now.
